"46664" screening at Basel Art Fair, Switzerland
46664 was the prison number of Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, Cape Town where he was held in captivity for 18 years. He was the 466th prisoner to be incarcerated on the island in 1964. In November 2002, Mr Mandela gave his prison number 46664 to Dave Stewart of Eurythmics so that he could use it to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS in South Africa by raising money for the Nelson Mandela Foundation.46664 - 1 Minute of Art to AIDS features on the specially commissioned Double DVD and premieres the creations of todayÊs leading contemporary artists, all of whom have created a one-minute video in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic currently inflicting Africa. Each artist has used only non-documentary techniques to convey the message of the 46664 campaign through the universal language of art. Hopefully the metaphors that the artists employ reach across cultural and religious barriers to touch the hearts and engage the minds around the world.
